Our first book is The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. Though the story takes place largely in Afganistan, and Hosseini himself is Afghani, the novel was written originally in English; so there should be no fear about translation errors. While the story is fiction, the content is very realistic and often graphically gritty. It is definitely not for children.
This book was chosen because it is recently published (so it uses practical modern language), is American (so we can avoid dialect differences to some degree), and because I hope that it will be engaging to all participants.
